Revital Fertilisers Taranaki kicked off their campaign with a first innings loss in the first round of the Furlong Cup.
On a green fresh wicket Manawatu won the toss and elected to bowl, Taranaki got off to a slow and steady start with openers Taranaki Associated Cleaners Dean Robinson and Josh Borrell. Robinson was first to go in the 11th over and from there wickets fell regularly, only 3 Taranaki batsmen made double figures with the star being debutant Jesse Vertongan who made a run a ball 50. Taranaki being bowled out for 109 in 47 overs.
In reply Manawatu surpassed Taranaki’s score for the loss of 7 wickets, all being bowled out for 146 and a 37 run lead late in day one. Debutant Ben Frewin picked up 4 for 21 from 10 overs with skipper Icons Sports Bar Mattie Thomas picking up 3 wickets.
Taranaki went out in the second innings looking to set up a lead and push for an outright. Taranaki Associated Cleaners Dean Robinson was certainly the talking point as he worked the ball to all areas of Pukekura Park on his way to his tenth century for Taranaki. Robinsons innings included 16 fours and 6 sixes as he was finally dismissed for 137. With 50 overs left in the day Taranaki declared at 252 for 9 setting up a run chase of 215. Manawatu were not in the mood to chase victory and decided to take their first innings points, Manawatu ended the game at 125 for 4 with former Taranaki player Trent McGrath finishing 41 not out. Icons Sports Bar Mattie Thomas picked up another 3 wickets.
