The current Taranaki cricket squad might have been busy at Pukekura Park at the weekend but it was plenty of players who have worn their colours recently who were having an impact at the start of the premier two-day competition on Saturday.

Opening batsman Josh Borrell was one, scoring 123 for New Plymouth Old Boys against Francis Douglas Memorial College, while fellow openers Ryan Fleming and Ben Hitchcock were also in dominant mood for New Plymouth Marist United.

The pair both scored centuries against New Plymouth Boys' High School, with Fleming, who played for Taranaki in their last match, making 151 not out while Hitchcock made 123 as Marist United knocked up 285-1 against a hapless attack.

Fleming's unbeaten innings included 20 boundaries while Hitchcock accumulated around the ground more, hitting the rope just nine times. After a long day in the field, Boys' High were 78-4 when stumps were drawn. Borrell's innings was part of Old Boys' total of 281-4 in reply to Francis Douglas' 139 with Kyle Pillay taking 4-36.

Scoring was a bit tighter in the match between Inglewood and Stratford at Inglewood. Batting first, the home side managed 165 thanks mainly to No 9 batsman Martin Keegan who top-scored with 40 as Ellis Taylor took 7-56 off 17.5 overs. Stratford passed the target, ending the day at 177-9 with Matt Simpson taking 5-44 after he had earlier made 34 valuable runs.

Hawera United are building up a good lead over Woodleigh in Hawera. After making 169, Hawera United bowled Woodleigh out for just 113 as Shaun Fowler chipped in with figures of 4-28. Batting a second time, Hawera United were 71-1, a lead of 127 runs.
